Lesson: The Growth Mindset
One of the Foundational Pillars of the Fight ON! Mentality
HavDweck, 2015 Growth Mindset: “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.”
Suppose you are walking in the street dressed in your favorite clothes when all of a sudden it starts raining cats and dogs. Now it might appear that you can do nothing about it but complain, turns out, it is not necessarily the case. It depends on how you take it; this is where your mindset comes in.
There are two mindsets: A Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset. Just like its name, having a fixed mindset will bound you to think within your boundaries that were crafted by your own perspectives and beliefs. You would always associate some “impossibility” in an uncertain situation. This will ultimately cause you to execute less than your actual potential.
Having a Growth Mindset is the ability to adapt to the situation in a way that positively affects your output. It is "the art of unlearning," which implies opening yourself to new experiences without your internal barriers in the form of judgment, self-hostility, and staying assumptive of unknown results.
Growth Mindset in Sports
It applies to everyone; you would fail to hit that certain weight goal for your marathon if you, let’s suppose, had a bad experience in your previous attempts to lose weight. With a fixed mindset, you will over-generalize things.
A growth mindset, on the other hand, would help you get out of your comfort zone and urge you to try again for the sake of experiencing something new the next time. This will ultimately help you analyze what works the best for you and what you can do to optimize your performance in the field.
Growth Mindset in Business
Perhaps one of the most important fields where a growth mindset is required is business. Whether you are a part of a large firm with a long history or you are a startup entrepreneur, having a flexible mindset would take you to much better heights than a fixed mindset would ever do. Taking calculated risks and expanding your business to discover better opportunities calls for a brave mind that separates itself from past experiences and has the ability to constantly relearn things. Moreover, following the same business strategy for years is one big mistake business people make. This is what surfaces as a result of fear, which a fixed mindset imposes on them. Therefore, projecting your fears without learning anything would keep you in an endless cycle of a business that keeps going on in the same phase.
Growth Mindset in Our Personal Lives
Having a growth mindset is not only restricted to our professional lives, but it has a high magnitude of influence on our daily lives as well. The success of our relationships with our children, partners, parents, friends, and even with ourselves are all based on having a mind that is not stagnant. There is no one human who doesn't go through some inevitable changes with time and experience. So, we cannot simply apply a fixed mindset to them forever.
A successful relationship evolves with time, and it is only possible with a growth mindset as it is water that flows, and life is only possible where there is a flow.
The Growth Mindset is a critical part of the Fight ON! Mentality, serving as one of the three foundational pillars, along with The Mamba Mentality and Mindfulness.
