Building the Fight ON! Mentality
PREPARING for games, practices, & competitions
Are you anxious prior to a big game, practice, or competition? Do you feel unsure before a game and afraid you might mess up? Is your mind scattered and full of distractions? I will help you get into the right competitive mindset!
Elite athletes use a pre-game routine to reduce distractions, minimize anxiety and narrow their focus. When you focus on your pre-game routine you’re not thinking about the “what-if” scenarios, the strength of your opponents, or anything that makes you doubt your ability.
Remember our 3-step process - the BE POSITIVE methodology.
Visualization
Visualization can help you recall positive plays, games, feelings, and emotions.
Self-Talk
Negative self-talk won’t help your performance. Learning how to control your thoughts is a skill you can learn to build your confidence. When negative thoughts come up, work to bring your mind back to being positive.
Choose a mantra to develop a positive self-talk habit. It could be a simple affirmation such as “GO, GO, GO” or “I feel strong”. Your mantra should be a phrase you can repeat over and over.
Goal Setting
In order to be a winner you need to put specific, long-term daily habits in place.
This can include practice habits like warming up, eating balanced meals, doing physical activity outside of practice, or practicing smart time management.

Goal Setting
In order to be a winner you need to put specific, long-term daily habits in place.
- Create an ABC goal: one that is ACHIEVABLE, BELIEVABLE, and COMMIT-ABLE.
This can include practice habits like warming up, eating balanced meals, doing physical activity outside of practice, or practicing smart time management.
- Break down your goal into action steps.
- Chart your progress - drink a certain amount of water, keep track of each time you show up to practice on time, or do a quick mindfulness routine each day.
