Article: I Want to Improve My Craft but Don't See Progress
Various factors drive people to do what they do. However, the major ones are purpose, mastery, and autonomy. It’s through experience that you acquire data and information that helps you in revealing your purpose. You can only become an expert in a certain area by accumulating and connecting enough dots related to them. Improving your craft practical knowledge about a manual skill shooting in basketball, catching in football or throwing in baseball and putting in the work to get better. To improve one's craft, you need to define your goals clearly and also develop a culture or habit that will lead to the achievement of your goals.
Ways that you can use to ensure progress in improving your craft
The most important is having a passion for acquiring the skills coupled with determination, integrity, and intelligently responding to the constantly changing environment. You should also have the power to translate ideas into manual expressions to get the correct outcome.
The second one would be to practice. A saying goes that practice makes perfect and improving your craft requires you to practice, practice, practice. Those that spend time on the boring (but effective skills training) are the ones that will get better. In practicing hard and getting out of your comfort zone, there are some habits that you will develop that will get you better, as long as you stick to those successful habits. This will in turn bring progress in your pursuit for the skills, although practicing is uncomfortable and strenuous.
The third would be being consistent with what you do. When you do something consistently, your muscle memory becomes sharper, and you experience acceleration in your progress and more creative breakthroughs. This consistency changes the part of the brain that is being challenged by the training (Martin, 2018). Take an example of shooting in basketball. When you consistently practice (the correct form and technique in game like situations), you end up being competent in shooting. You are able to perform at peak levels when the game is on the line.
In conclusion, controlling your habits in practicing and defining the set goals will most likely lead to a positive mindset that will in return facilitate the process of improving your craft and becoming an expert in what you do. Take your time and get better. Fight ON!
