I Make Too Many Mistakes in Games and Practices and Don't Feel Like I am Getting Better
Mistakes are part of learning. When practicing or during a game, you make a mistake that you are supposed to do something to immediately leave the mistake behind you and then refocus. Focusing on a mistake made will lead to another and another which might go downhill. You should understand that it’s a mental mistake to carry mistakes around be it while practicing or during the competition since this will make you feel like you are not getting any better in the game. The best way of improving your skills is having the right mentality and being focused, and more importantly forgetting about the mistakes.
There are different ways of ensuring progress and also avoiding mistakes in the future.
The first one would be to have more grit or the ability to persist after encountering a setback in training or practicing. Grit is related to your mindset. If you have a growth mindset, you will be more resilient and will have more grit (Bathla, 2018). A growth mindset has the belief that your actions can change the outcome and your abilities are not fixed and unchangeable.
The second is to stop focusing too much on whether you are making any progress after practicing. Set small goals and reach them slowly. Focus on the process and not the outcome! Spending too much time thinking about long term progress or the outcome deprives all of the time spent focusing on the skills learned. It’s important to focus on what you are training and not how good you actually are. This way you will find yourself improving quicker.
To overcome the fear of making mistakes and the feeling of failure, you will need to have a growth mindset by thinking in terms of progress, not in the contrast of right and wrong. You should not look at failure as a benchmark for the potential in you but as a stepping stone to your success. Every mistake made is another learning experience. Continue to make mistakes and learn from the.
Making mistakes is a good thing. You have to make mistakes to grow and get better. Don't worry about the past or future and focus on the NOW. Know that you are getting better every day if you put in the work. Stick to you plan and Fight ON!
