When I Face Big Challenges, I Always Break Down
Every time I face a big challenge, something that looks more than I can handle, or something I have never done before. I break down. This kind of break down is mental. The brain goes numb. Overwhelmed. Everything else seems confusing. It’s like the one where you practically feel your mental activeness recoiling into oblivion like a snail retreating into its shell. Some other times, it feels like a panic attack. Short of breath. I have no desire to work anymore. I’d pace about, drum my fingers, ruffle my hands through my hair repeatedly. In the bid for composure, I gather myself, pick my phone to find something relaxing, maybe. However, a part of me knows that using my phone in the face of serious work is never to relax my mind. It is always an attempt to escape what needs to be done. At least, for a moment. So, I’d visit Instagram, watch this celebrity’s page, admire their car, study, and studio, hoping to have something like that or better in the future. A few clicks and would get to watch some comedy skits—a few more clicks. Time drifts on. Oh! I am supposed to remain relevant, know what is going on in the business world. I’d rush to LinkedIn, read up on admired persons’ profiles. What’s up, Paul Schmidt —a major mover in bank finance? Has he acquired any new certifications recently? New appointment or project? And then, time flies! One thing remains —the job I am supposed to do.
Hiding away from challenges solves nothing, it only prolongs the time it will take to have it done. I have always known this, but have always felt helpless about what to do. While reading up on things that could help my condition, I made three amazing discoveries.
The first thing is to define the goals of the project. I realized that a project that looks complicated and scares one away is one with an unclear goal. So, what I do is to try to define the goals of the project. To aid this, I’d ask as many possible questions as possible, for clarification. The questions would be asked in a professional way that would not make me look incapable or confused. Gaining clarity is key.
The next thing is to create an atmosphere that is convenient for me to work in. I am motivated by nature’s beauty. I am motivated by the white color and love solemn music that you necessarily do not hear the lyrics, but it keeps tearing through everywhere, quietly. Hence, Enya is a favorite work playlist. The right environment promotes my productivity.
Thirdly, I learned that creating successful working habits will significantly help. So, I learned to create a perfect routine that works for me. I learned to use a solution board where I write the task to be done. Afterward, I break down the tasks into steps. I make sure I have all the information for each step carefully laid out and spelled out on the board before progressing.
When facing big challenges, change your mindset and face it head on. Know that you will succeed because of your mental and physical preparation. Stay mentally tough and Fight ON!
